SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Cash-strapped Americans looking for a cheap getaway at a state park or campground this summer are likely to find instead reduced hours, higher fees and closed beaches and pools.

State parks and historic sites across the nation have had to cut back because of budgets squeezed by the economic downturn, said Philip McKnelly, executive director of the National Association of State Parks Directors.

"Most states are trying to cut back in some area," McKnelly, former director of North Carolina's state parks system, said in a telephone interview this week from Raleigh.

While state parks are struggling, national parks that had service cutbacks two years ago are expecting an upswing fueled by federal stimulus dollars.

In Illinois, 11 state-run historic sites reopened in April after being shut down for five months to help close a budget deficit measured in the billions. Utah's 43 state parks and museums are hiring fewer seasonal workers and eliminating some positions because their budget was slashed 15 percent. In Georgia, the budget passed last month slashes state park money by nearly 40 percent, while Wisconsin has more than 230 fewer seasonal parks workers this year than it had two years ago.

And a year after they successfully fought California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposal to shut dozens of state parks, advocates again face the possibility of closures, depending on a May 19 special election on the state's complicated plan to close a huge budget shortfall.

"These [parks] systems need to be maintained. They don't take care of themselves," said Elizabeth Goldstein, a former New York state parks administrator who's now president of the California State Parks Foundation. "We are concerned that cuts might be proposed which are draconian to parks but have little financial ability to close the budget gap."

In New York, some state-run beaches and pools from Long Island to the shores of lakes Erie and Ontario will be closed or have reduced hours this summer, while campgrounds from New York's southwestern corner to the Adirondacks are opening for the season later and closing earlier.

At Saratoga Spa State Park, the Peerless swimming pool popular with families and summer camps will be closed on Tuesdays, the day when it usually gets the fewest visitors, parks officials said.

That decision left some local recreation departments scrambling to find other swimming spots for youths who attend day camps.

"We've been going to Peerless on Tuesdays for a kabillion years," said Tracey Kubis, assistant recreation director for the town of Wilton, just outside Saratoga. "They could have made a decision a little earlier."

In all, about 100 out of the 213 state parks and historic sites across New York will see some reductions in services.

While the admission price remains $6 to $8 per vehicle at most New York parks, fees for such activities as golf, camping and dock and pavilion rentals have increased, parks spokeswoman Eileen Larrabee said.

There is some good news in New York: none of the state's parks or historic sites have had to close despite a budget cut from about $200 million to $172 million.

New York state parks Commissioner Carol Ash said she has fielded some irate e-mails, phone calls and letters from people upset over the changes announced last month.

"I always encourage them to try and understand the economic reality we're living through," she said. "The lesson here is people love their parks and they consider them their neighborhood amenities, and when something happens to their neighborhood amenity, they get mad."

The service reductions come as many New Yorkers and other Americans look for inexpensive outings closer to home.

"It seems a shame in these times when everyone has less money and parks are one of the few affordable recreation outlets that they're cutting back," said Robin Dropkin, executive director of the advocacy group Parks & Trails New York.

The situation is far different for the National Parks Service, which instituted its own round of service reductions just a couple years ago. Under the Obama administration's spending plan, the agency will get a 7 percent budget increase, according to Jeffrey Olson, a national parks spokesman.

"We have a huge stimulus package that's working its way out into the countryside, so we are going to be spending $750 million in the next 18 months in national park units," he said.

Visits to the agency's nearly 450 parks, cultural sites, battlefields and other properties increased by 3 million, to 275 million, from 2006 to 2007 before slipping slightly last year, Olson said. This year, he said, "we think we're going to be in the same ballpark, maybe a smidge up."

The 50-state total for state-park visitations increased by 18 million to nearly 748 million in 2008, when gas prices topped $4 a gallon, McKnelly said

Wonderful designs of tragic wartime artist live on

Wonderful designs of tragic wartime artist live on

0 Comments | Western Morning News, The, Jul 24, 2010

Many will know the successful alphabet mugs, produced by Wedgwood from a range of ideas from Eric Ravilious (1903-1942), a man who saw design and ideas in everything. His father ran an antiques business in Eastbourne, so as a child he would have been familiar with the whole concept of art, style and the importance of fashion.

After winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Art he studied under Paul Nash and there met and was later to work with Edward Bawden. But for the war intervening, his available designs and watercolours would be far more numerous. He was a war artist but while stationed in Iceland, was sent in search of a missing plane. Both aircraft and crews were never heard of again but his wonderful designs live on, one of which was called Travel when printed on a dinner service by Wedgwood. Within a black and blue border design, this desirable set was bought as a wedding present in 1953 and has often been used, offering a pair of tureens and covers, gravy boat and saucer, oval meat plate, six two-handled soup bowls, five dinner plates and six dessert plates plus six side plates, two of the latter with small chips.

Such pieces rarely come under the gavel, and when available, find plenty of interest which is why an estimate of Pounds 700-Pounds 1,000 has been suggested.

It's a world away from the Meissen part tea service bearing a floral design in panels inset into the deep cobalt ground, enhanced with gilt. Alas this also has seen plenty of use, so only Pounds 100- Pounds 150 will be expected for the remaining pieces, even though impressive still. Similar bids are invited for nine cut glass double lipped finger bowls, which are also rarely seen on tables nowadays.

These are also suitable to keep spoons cool for use with iced sweets at the end of the meal. They appear perfect, but as there is a slight blemish to the Doulton Lambeth stoneware vase of 1883 by the famous Barlow sisters, just Pounds 300-Pounds 500 is asked for it, despite being decorated with ponies instead of Hannah's more numerous deer.

Just 9.5in (24cm) high, an attractive vessel all the same, which is so decorative could be purely ornamental especially as the damage is a chip to the beading.

It is always imperative to look closely at everything before raising a hand at auction.

How To Catch Him Cheating

How To Catch Him Cheating by Cindy English
in Relationships / Marriage (submitted 2009-11-07)

These tips are for every woman out there who suspects that her man is being unfaithful. It is never wise to accuse without proof so, if you want to catch him cheating you'll have to do a little detective work first.

Remember, men can be very sneaky creatures when it comes to women but, they are sometimes careless too. Often they will slip up and overlook the simple details making it easier for you to catch them. So, here are a few things to look for:

    * Check your cell phone bill. Often when a man is cheating, he'll order a second cell phone you don't know about that he can use to stay in touch with his lover.

    * Look at your credit card statements and see if there are any unexpected charges at electronics stores. Some men will go to Radio Shack and buy a pay as you go phone. They cost about $50 - so if there is that kind of charge and you don't see any new video games in your house, ask him about it.

    * Whenever he's "working late," call him up at random times and listen to the noise in the background. If you hear bar noises or he doesn't pick up, that's a fair sign he's working - on a woman!

    * This may sound a little tacky - but if he comes home late from work, try to engage him in sex right away. If he resists, there may be a reason for it. If he insists on a shower first, he may be trying to get rid of the telltale odors of latex or the other woman. If he does go for it but smells like soap, he has already had a shower and gotten rid of the evidence.

    * Keep a close eye on him if he's suddenly dressing better or paying more attention to his appearance. Men let themselves go when they are married, but try to spruce up when there is a new lily to pollinate.

    * Smell his clothes when you do the laundry

Keep in mind the

Keep in mind the number of guests at your wedding. If your budget is not enough to cover higher end wedding favors, you can offset the costs by providing your wedding party with higher end favors and your guests with a lower end favors.

Choose wedding favors that match the theme of your wedding reception. If you are having a beach themed wedding, choose beach themed wedding favors. Choose colors that match the wedding reception party. If you like a certain favor and the colors do not match the reception party, consider adding a ribbon, tag or bag that matches the color theme of the wedding with the wedding favor.

Another growing trend with wedding favors is custom personalization or engraved favors. There is a personal attachment with you and your guests when they receive a personalized wedding favor. Usually the first names of the bride and groom along with their wedding date are common engravings used.

The wedding favor you choose provides a lasting impression with your guests.

The United Nations

The United Nations is holding hearings on this issue of building nuclear weapons. But Iran is claiming it must have nuclear weapons to protect itself from other nations with nuclear weapons in the region. Of course this is BS because no one has threatened Iran and Iran and itself has threatened Israel and said it would blow Israel off the map.

Some of this talk from Iran is political rhetoric used to appease the Islamic fundamentalists in their hate towards all Jews, yet we all know that when radical regimes start making threats like that and proceed to build nuclear weapons or WMD that we must take the threats seriously. Iran has already proved its hostile intentions towards the United States of America by sending insurgency into Iraq and its hostile intentions towards Israel by funding the international terrorist organization and now the controlling political party or Palestine, Hamas. Consider all this in 2006.

Dozier and her team were

Dozier and her team were embedded with 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. They were reporting on a story covering American troops in Baghdad on Memorial Day.

This story appeared as the top news story on virtually every American news
site and presumably will be a front page headline on virtually every American
Newspaper. Cameraman Paul Douglas and sound man James Brolan were killed in the
attack along with an un-named American soldier and an un-named Iraqi
interpreter. Why is it that we will probably never see, the name of the American
soldier who died while protecting the CBS crew?

Every article I saw this morning remembered that ABC News co-anchor Bob
Woodruff and his cameraman were severely injured in a bombing in late January of
this year. It seems ironic that on this day after Memorial Day the headline news
stories remember the fallen journalists in the Iraq war, but do not mention
names of any of the 2000 plus soldiers who have died.

Maybe it is because we see the television journalists in our living rooms
every day and we feel like they are our friends. Maybe we feel that television
journalists are ?more important? than ordinary soldiers.
